Short Artist Bio:
Defense Complex is a cabinet of curiosity showcasing objects, images, furniture and a collection of contemporary art curated by Imen Djouini and Jonathan Taube. Djouini and Taube are artist and designers creating bodies of works in the area of defense and intervention. They have worked in image production, public art, community action, curation, and research.
Djouini a visual artist native of Algeria, works on the deconstruction of nationalist and regional symbols with the intent of creating a poetic aesthetic experience. Her artwork explores issues of native identity, especially the position of women. She uses the specifics of her background culture to create works that communicate global ideas about loss, meaning, and memory. Current works include the detachment of segments of various flags and reorienting them to create new and alternative spaces.
Under the Defense Complex banner is the studio of Wikitaube, a decentralized collaborative network of specialist that contribute research and effort towards the development of a range of projects. Recently contributors Jonathan Taube and Tada Chicka Kono traveled to Israel and Palestine to study the situation of the Prickly Pear Cactus or Sabra as it has become a shared image and shared barrier.
